It’s hard not to want to share food with your pet, especially healthy foods. But not all things that are good for humans are good for pets. Here’s a list of six foods that you should never give your pet:
- Dairy products: Though cats and dogs are known for loving milk and cheese, it may not be wise to give it to them. Most cats are lactose-intolerant, and many dogs are as well.
- Grapes and raisins: Great for humans, these are actually toxic to dogs and cats – and can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. If you notice these symptoms after your pet eats grapes or raisins, he or she needs an immediate visit to the vet.
- Avocados: These contain persin, which can cause allergic reaction in dogs, and can also be toxic in large amounts. Avocados may cause stomach upset.
- Onions and garlic: All members of the onion family are toxic to dogs, and garlic is the most toxic ounce per ounce. Even trace amounts of these foods can lead to red blood cell damage.
- Macadamia nuts: Can cause pain and weakness in your pet’s legs, low fever or tremors.
- Raw foods: Consuming raw meat, fish or eggs can put your pet at risk for foodborne illness or parasites. Though their ancestors obviously ate raw meat and fish, domestic dogs are not well equipped for this. And modern meat processing increases everyone’s risk of disease.
