If you’re looking for a great way to detoxify and cleanse your body, or looking for a little rejuvenation, what a treat this will be! The lemon detox diet, popularized by pop star Beyonce Knowles, is known for its efficacy at removing toxins and contributing to short-term weight loss. Also known as the “Master Cleanse,” this detox method has been around for nearly fifty years and has clearly stood the test of time.
Stanley Burroughs first created the lemon detox diet as a natural remedy for stomach ulcers. Many patients experienced relief from their ailments after following the diet’s instructions and also noted that they had lost some weight in the process. The theory behind “The Master Cleanse” is that one needs to detoxify their body in order to promote healing. Advancements in our understanding of nutrition and other sciences have shown that leading an unhealthy lifestyle, one that is ridden with fast foods, sofa-surfing and other bad habits, contributes to the accumulation of toxins in your body.
So, what goes into the lemon detox diet?
The lemon detox diet requires that you drink six to twelve cups of lemonade a day. Not just any lemonade though. The lemonade used in the detox diet is comprised of lemons, pure maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water. And you have to drink it in place of food every day for a minimum of just ten days. Every time you start to feel hungry, you drink a glass of the lemonade. It is suggested that you take a laxative once in the morning and once in the evening, but a simple saltwater flush can be used as a replacement. Your goal, however, should be to observe at least three bowel movements a day. This ensures that your body is pushing out all the toxins and all the waste is being removed from your intestines.
After finishing the cleanse, it is important to slowly reintroduce solid foods so you don’t shock your system. It is, after all, essentially a juice cleanse and you don’t want to overdo it. The best way to break the cleanse is to start with orange juice, followed by vegetable soups and broths. By day three, you can begin eating whole fruits and vegetables again. It is important not to overeat, and to make sure you continue to drink lots of water. The reintroduction of heavier foods should continue along this slow and steady trend. After completing the cleanse, it is highly recommended that you observe healthy eating habits and maintain a fruit and veggie-centered diet. This will help to extend and maintain all of the benefits provided by the cleanse.
