Chickpeas, or garbanzo beans, are the main ingredients in some of your probable-favorite foods. Hummus, falafel, and pasta e fagioli, just to name a few. But did you know chickpeas are packed with nutrition and a wondrously beneficial addition to your diet?
A one-cup serving of chickpeas contains 15 grams of protein and 13 grams of fiber! In addition to all that satisfying protein and heart healthy fiber, chickpeas are vitamin and mineral dense. A serving of chickpeas also contains 50% of your daily potassium needs as well as 69% of your daily iron. Iron is the most common mineral deficiency, and also extremely important for healthy blood cells.
Chickpeas are also rich in vitamin B6 and magnesium, which promote brain and body health.
In addition, chickpeas are rich in several of the most needed minerals for healthy bones – calcium, magnesium and iron. They are also an excellent choice for diabetics as their high protein, high fiber and high mineral content helps to stabilize blood sugar levels.
Overall, the chickpea is a supremely healthy and versatile bean, as well as being extremely affordable. Try roasting them in the oven with your favorite spices for a crunchy, healthy snack!
